Die aus Wien stammende Sängerin, Cellistin und Songwriterin Gudula Urban ist bereits seit Jugendjahren als Musikerin rund um den Globus mit unterschiedlichsten Ensembles mit Konzerten und Tourneen unterwegs:  als Orchester- und Kammermusikerin, als klassische Solistin, als Jazz-Cellistin, Gospel- und Jazz-Sängerin, Country-Fiddlerin und schließlich als Bandleaderin mit ihren eigenen Projekten.

 

Jazz war immer ihre heimliche große Liebe - nun gibt es ein neues Programm, bei dem sie sich mit ihrer Band an verschiedenste Genres, Grooves, Themen und mögliche und unmögliche musikalische Ideen herantastet:

die komplett aus eigener Feder stammenden  Stücke sind eine bunte Mischung aus Jazz und Soul mit Elementen aus Pop, Gospel und Funk, sowohl Vocal-Nummern als auch Instrumentalstücken, Highlights aus ihrem Debut Album „smile on my face“ sowie viele neue Songs mit einer Tendenz zu mehr Soul und Funk-lastigen Grooves.

 

Zu ihren Inspirationen zählen u.a. Stevie Wonder, Joss Stone, Jacob Collier, Hiromi Uehara, Weather Report, Marcus Miller, uvm.

 

Crossrhythms, Christian Radio UK, sagt über ihr Debut-Album „smile on my face“:

„Gudula Urban has been described as "the Austrian answer to Norah Jones." Well, I don't know about that, but this is certainly a superb album that will put a smile on anybody's face. Gudula's vocals are sublime, the music emotive and the rhythms contagious. With a mixture of wistful ballads and invigorating jazz numbers, and with lyrics which are encouraging and filled with hope and joy,this album is a delight. The live recording of "Smile On My Face" emphasises the joy and it has an irresistible beat and includes a mesmerising performance from Heribert Kohlich on piano. Gudula's rendition of the classic "Amazing Grace" is equally captivating. On several of the tracks Gudula not only sings but also plays cello. This is particularly effective on the album's closing song "Coming Home" which was inspired by the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15.“

Heribert Hepi Kohlich - Klavier, Keyboards: 

Nach klassischer Ausbildung und Studium der Musikwissenschaft seit 30 Jahren professioneller Jazzpianist. Cd-Aufnahmen, mehrfacher Wettbewerbsgewinner. Konzerte, Club- und Festivalauftritte mit vielen internationalen jazzstars wie Doc Cheatham, Al Grey, Art Farmer, Lew Tabackin, Warren Vache, Bobby Durham, Ken Peplowski, James Morrison. Arbeit mit Sängern wie Maria Joao, Carole Alston, Ines Reiger, Sheila Cooper, Tini Kainrath, Bill Ramsey, Kevin Mehogany. Dozent bei Masterclasses im In- und Ausland, lehrt seit 1992 an der Universität für Musik Wien.

Gina Schwarz - E-Bass  

Hans Koller Preisträgerin 2007, Höchststipendium Berklee College of Music, Porgy & Bess Stage-Band 2017/18, viele eigene Projekte und CD-Produktionen; spielte u.a. mit Jim Black, George Garzone, Andy Middleton, Jeff Boudreaux, Gerry Hemingway, Diego Pinera, Erwin Schrott, Krysztof  Dobrek, Yta Moreno;  lehrt seit 2011 an Musikuniversität Wien.

Martin Peham - Drums 

Studium am Konservatorium Wien, in vielen Bereichen tätig von Jazz Bands bis Big Bands, Funk und Weltmusik; Konzerttätigkeit u.a. mit Global Groove Lab, Zoe Straub, Furby Lewinsky

Die Musiker haben großteils bereits in anderen Formationen zusammengearbeitet und treffen einander hier wieder, um sich in neue Gefilde hineinzuwagen: Hepi Kohlich begeistert am Klavier mit seinen feinsinnigen Soli,  Gina Schwarz's Bass liefert das kreativ-groovige Fundament, Martin Pehams Schlagzeugkunst macht es schwer, still zu sitzen und Gudula Urban entführt mit dem warmen Timbre ihrer Stimme und dem Sound ihres Cellos in andere Welten!

With a mix of jazz, pop, funk, gospel and more Gudula invites the listener into her world of music!

 

Gudula Urban is a Vienna-based singer/songwriter/cellist who is at home in jazz, soul and gospel as well as in classical music. She has studied cello in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria and the USA, worked as a university cello instructor in Bangkok, Thailand and has performed as a soloist, a chamber and orchestra musician and band member all over the world. 

 

Meanwhile her interest in singing grew more and more: she performed in the US and Canada as one of the only two whites in an all black Gospel group, founded her own gospel band after she returned back to Austria and began to write her own songs - a colorful mix of jazz, gospel, soul, pop, funk and latin - telling about her life with God, which is always an adventure! Supported by wonderful musicians in she recorded her debut CD "smile on my face" and took it on the road, playing in Austria, having appearances on Radio and TV.

In her concerts Gudula usually mixes her songs with instrumental jazz tunes on her cello. These days she's busy working on new music, which tends to go a bit more into the direction of soul and funk...
